COMSOL FEM Analysis of Protein 6UWM Ion Channel Movement

 During Spring 2024, I undertook an independent Biomedical research project with other mechanical and biomedical engineering students to model the ion channel movement of 6UWM proteins. This movement was modeled utilizing COMSOL's Solid Mechanics FEM software alongside ChimeraX electron microscopy scanned CAD models of 6UWM proteins. Ion channels are the mechanisms by which proteins and cells intake nutrients and compounds, and modeling this exact mechanism by FEM has not been done before. Having this modeled with exact displacement metrics is groundbreaking to the intersectionality between mechanical engineering and cell biology.
